At the end of Summer 2021, we were introduced to BioBuu; a great initiative focused on tackling two of the main challenges our planet is facing. These two challenges are caused by the growing global population’s significant impacts on our environment:
1. meat (protein) consumption/production and the environmental challenges facing the industry
2. waste production
It is not for the faint-hearted, we would say – this great initiative is using black fly larvae to convert food waste into animal foods and soil fertiliser. This reduces the footprint of the production of protein significantly and utilises organic food waste (which is a real problem in Africa, particularly in rapidly urbanizing cities).
We fell in love with this project and were beyond amazed by how impactful BioBuu is already and would be for Africa and our planet in the long run.

About BioBuu:
It started in the founders’ yard in Tanzania in 2015 and fast forward to 2022. It is now in warehouses across two countries, Kenya and Tanzania, with expansion plans to further set up insect farms across Africa.
Matthew Haden and Kigen Compton founded BioBuu Limited in 2016. It was registered in Tanzania following three years of research on black soldier flies’ breeding and feeding behaviours. The company has focused on a factory model that produces high protein chicken and fish feed and organic compost.
BioBuu believes in a solution that can deal with these two challenges mentioned earlier more sustainably and cost-effectively.
